There aren’t a lot of things I consider myself an expert in. Sarcasm and sass are high on the list accompanied by setting up a work from home office.
To start, I spent a lot of time thinking through exactly what I wanted. The look of the office was important to me. It’s at the front of our house. It’s next to a high traffic area. I wanted it to look nice, but most importantly I wanted it to be efficient. Pre-covid, I worked from home a day or two a week. Now, I work from home 8+ hours a day 5 days a week! Now that’s a long time to be spending in one room.
I liked my office in our old townhome, but it definitely needed some efficiency upgrades. When we moved a couple of months ago, I took the opportunity to give my office a big upgrade.
After thinking a lot about it, I decided to invest in two big things: my desk and my office chair.
Back at work, I had a stand sit desk. I missed it once we started to exclusively work from home. I decided to invest in one. It took me a while to find an affordable one that had an electronic lifting mechanism. I love it. In my opinion, it is worth ever penny.
Next, I wanted a proper desk chair. Investing in a quality one can really make a difference. It will last you years and years not to mention save your back and posture.
In addition to those investments, I treated myself to a bike desk. It comes in handy when I get a little antsy especially if the weather has been less than ideal and I don’t get to do my normal daily walk.
There are a few other things key things to my office:
- My monitors are heavily used. They aren’t anything special, but I highly recommend getting yourself some monitors. They make multi tasking 10x easier. My efficiency at work is noticeably higher when I have multiple screens. They can also be mounted at a variety of heights to encourage good neck alignment when sitting at a desk.
- Next, I recommend a wireless mouse and keyboard. It allows you to be more flexible with your work set up. I love the look of my mouse and keyboard, but more importantly the click of the mouse is almost silent which comes in handy when I am trying to multitask during a zoom call (sssh don’t tell anyone).
- Next, I suggest getting a webcam. I used the one on my laptop for a long time, but I didn’t like the angle (double chin much?) and having to awkwardly reach to type wasn’t the best for my posture. Plus, the camera is a higher quality video then my work laptop webcam so it seems more professional. win? win?
- Last but not least, I had to figure out my cable management plan. I know it seems simple or less important, but it actually makes such a difference in the “look” of the office. It makes everything feel more polished. So take your time with this step. My management system needs some improvement, but it’s a start. This was also the main reason for having my desk against the wall and not in the center of the room like most office layouts. I hate the look of all the chords. Plus I like having the natural light from the windows blasting me each morning.
I hope you find this helpful when setting up your home office. comment anything you love in your office that you think I need!
